As normal looking as it is, I feel that Ford pulls off the two tone on the Expedition really well.
Dodge too.

Two tone is a key feature in Australia's automotive past. And is still present in the custom crowd. Here's the rest I posted on the front page: http://jalopnik.com/australia-says…

Methinks he was just looking for something controversial to post. I think the editors do that sometimes. Y'know, for the sake of views.

Possibly. And as Archduke pointed out his DD is in fact two tone.

I'm pretty confident in saying that the Hawk is my favorite American car from the 50's because it's so restrained. The 1st Gen Vette and t-bird are close but the Hawk is just classy still today.

I've always loved the Ford Flex in all color options and combos, and I believe our Ingot Silver Metallic '14 (shown above) with the two-tone appearance package looks especially good.

Looks great! Titanium package? Ecoboost?
![]() 11/10/2014 at 23:37 |
|
Thanks! They dropped the Titanium trim for the newer models, so the top trim level is the "Limited", which ours is.
Unfortunately it isn't an Ecoboost, but as it's the wife's car/our family hauler, she didn't want the extra power (I did lol) and we didn't want the AWD which is mandatory with the Ecoboost engine when we may only really, truly use (or even need) the AWD a handful of times in a given winter. Otherwise for 99.9999% of the driving throughout the year it'd just be hauling around the extra weight and getting permanently worse gas mileage compared to FWD (ours).
A friend of mine does have a '13 Flex Ecoboost though, and it's quite entertaining to experience that 4,900+ lbs box move the way it does lol. Surprises quite a few people in other cars. However, at 287 HP and a few hundred lbs lighter, the FWD model isn't as much of a slouch as one would think. It's a bit poochy out of the hole (the big 20" wheels don't help here), but once under way, it pulls harder than you'd expect.
Regardless of power/performance figures, one thing the Flex has in spades is space and comfort. The seats are unbelievably comfortable, both front row and 2nd row, and even the 3rd row isn't a bad place to be for adults (though I wouldn't exactly want to ride 1000 miles back there). Next to a full-size conversion van, it's one of the best people haulers with (IMO) tons of style and it drives surprisingly well for something shaped like a shoebox.

I see an awful lot of coloured roofs and stripes, and 80s-refugee plastic cladding and graphics in this thread.
Two-tone bodywork doesn't include the roof or 80s plastic cladding. Roofs are optional, and plastic cladding is just a development of nudge strips, bull bars, running boards, and the like. Stripes and 80s graphics are out because they're simple accents, unless they are traditional chassis-colours, such as hood stripes.
Two-tone work must follow or accentuate the profile of the body. It can flow into, or contrast with the roof. It's quite illuminating that a lot of people simply have no appreciation for this, and this is why we can't have nice things .
![]() 11/11/2014 at 13:58 |

I did notice this. A Ford SUV with gold running boards and fenders isn't really two-tone. Nor is a muscle car with graphics.

I'm equally convinced a blue Mini with with a white roof isn't two-tone. But add those bonnet stripes, recalling chassis colours, and you're halfway there. It's still not right to call it two-tone though, unless those stripes follow the crease lines.
*goes away to think some more about this*
